Constellation
Andromeda
The shape: a chain of stars hanging from the Square of Pegasus.
Princess Andromeda was chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster – as punishment for the vanity of her mother Cassiopeia. Perseus rescued her. In her constellation lies the Andromeda Galaxy: 2.5 million light-years away, the most distant object you can see with the naked eye.
The stars of the figure
From bright to faint. Brightness is given in magnitudes (mag): the smaller the number, the brighter the star.
- Alpheratz · 2.06 mag
- Mirach · 2.06 mag
- Almach · 2.1 mag
- DeltaAnd · 3.27 mag
In the 3D model
In the 3D model, under “Explore”, the sky dome shows when the constellation Andromeda can be seen above Switzerland. “Constellations in 3D” shows how far apart its stars really are.
